Why Pray?
Have you felt a dryness in your life? Spiritual dryness can occur when their isn't a devoted time to communicate with God or a barrier placed before the divine. Prayer is how we can remedy this.
Our relationship with God is that of a personal one and he will never force himself into someone's life unless it is needed.
How do we pray?
First we have stock prayers, Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory Be, etc., but prayer should be as simple as talking with God.
For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look
turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love,
embracing both trial and joy -St. Theresé Lisieux
We can start this process during moments we feel tempted or hopelessness, for in those moments it doesn't take much for us to fall aways from God. It also doesn't take much to come back to Him either. All it takes is our active heart and mind to be turned to our heavenly Father, and we will begin to have a more fruitful relationship with God.
Exercise: Take 1 minute and sit in a comfortable position, silencing the noise around you. After that begin with a short amount of time and increase your conversation to God. It can be about your day, struggles or success, blessings or curses, for God knows your heart and knows what you think of Him.
This is St. John Vianney's prayer:
I love you, O my God, and my only desire is to love you until
the last breath of my life. I love you, O my infinitely lovable
God, and I would rather die loving you, than live without
loving you. I love you, Lord, and the only grace I ask is to
love you eternally. . . . My God, if my tongue cannot say in
every moment that I love you, I want my heart to repeat it to
you as often as I draw breath. -Amen
Note, that it is not our typical three stated above, it is purely from the heart. It are the prayers from the heart that we begin to realize our spiritual gifts that God has given us.
We can often feel that prayer is not needed or is wanted. This is never the case, as the world and everyone in it is in need of prayers on a daily basis.
Let us never forget that prayer is ultimately a form of humility towards God and shows him who we are at that moment.
